Purple is the color of royalty, mystery, wisdom, and magic—a color used and revered around the world since the earliest days of ancient history. It's a rich color that’s often overlooked, yet it’s hard to find another shade that can fill your writing with the same sophistication.
Let’s take a look at our top purple fountain pen ink recommendations here at JetPens, then delve into an in-depth comparison of all our purple inks.
All Waterman inks have thoughtful bottle designs. Because they’re faceted, they can be turned to rest on their sides. This makes it supremely easy to fill your pen even as the ink level gets lower.
Each Pilot Iroshizuku ink is inspired by nature and well-behaved for easy maintenance. Yama-budo comes in a stunning 50 ml glass bottle designed to be bottom-heavy to prevent it from tipping over. A small divot in the bottom also lets you insert your pen deeper to continue filling it as the ink level gets low. Smaller 15 ml bottles and proprietary cartridges are also available.
Summer Purple is available in a 50 ml bottle and convenient standard international short cartridges.
Though it’s reasonably dark, this ink is still noticeably purple, so we recommend checking with your teachers before you write your next paper with it.
Eisen-Gallus-Tinte Scabiosa is one of Rohrer & Klinger’s traditional iron gall inks, which are known for being more acidic than normal fountain pen inks. While they’re safe to use, we still recommend giving your pen a regular cleaning to avoid the risk of staining.
Rohrer & Klingner Jule is a pigment-based ink, so any pen that is inked with it should be cleaned regularly to avoid clogging.

Herbin, the oldest ink manufacturer in the world, is famous for its natural ink formulas that won’t harm pens even if you forget to clean them regularly. These inks are also pH neutral, so anything you write or draw should last a long time if you use acid-free paper.
Document Violet can actually be considered more of fast-absorbing than a fast-drying ink, as it soaks into the paper’s fibers instead of staying on top of the paper’s surface. This may cause the ink to “feather” or look fuzzy.
Mata Hari’s Cordial is one of Noodler’s Bulletproof Inks, which use special cellulose-reactive dyes that are permanent on paper yet gentle enough to use in pens. They are also resistant to known tools of forgers, such as UV light, bleach, and other solvents.
We should note that Ebony Purple comes in an ink bottle with a wide mouth that tends to form an ink bubble at the top. It’s a good idea to open the bottle on a flat, nonporous surface with a towel underneath to prevent accidental spills and stains.
The Platinum Classic Inks line offers chic, off-black shades, all of which are great for writing and artwork alike.
All Dominant Industry Inks come with cloth bags to protect the bottles from dust, and single-use pipettes that can be used to fill eyedropper pens.
Silky Purple can be used on its own or combined with Platinum’s other Mixable Inks to create your own custom ink. The Mixing Kit—which includes dilution liquid, an empty bottle, plastic droppers, and a color chart—makes it easy to try out your ink experiments.
Each Jacques Herbin Special Collection Ink contains tiny glitter particles suspended in the ink. We recommend gently shaking the bottle before filling your pen and agitating your pen before writing. This fountain pen ink line is safe to use in fountain pens but does require a thorough cleaning when changing inks—unless you want your next ink to have silver sparkles, too.
