STEIN stands for "Strongest Technology by Enhanced SiO2 Integrated Network". Each container contains 40 pieces of lead.

The Pentel Stein Enhanced Silica Pencil Lead features a reinforced silica core that makes the Stein Pentel's smoothest, strongest, sharpest pencil lead yet! The lead is also designed to be smear resistant, allowing you to have beautiful, clear writing and smudge free hands (great for left-handed people).

Note: This is the 2B lead in 0.5 mm. Pictures showing how to open the case feature HB lead in 0.5 mm.

Pros:
Easy to grab 1 or 2 leads
Doesn't make a chisel end as fast as other leads
!!confirmed!! It doesn't leave smudges at all when writing or erasing

Cons:
Scratchy when writing
Still break way too much like any of the cheap leads do
Dispensing mechanism does loud clicks, no idea why they designed it like this

The test:
Wrote a total of 9 pages using a Platinum Zero Shin (MZ-500A) 0.5mm pencil and 12 pages with Pentel Ain Stein. On each page I made a mark each time lead broke and which lead brand I was using. In 9 pages the NanoDia did NOT break. In 12 pages the Pentel Ain Stein broke 9 times. Clearly killing both Platinum's claim of its double-chuck mechanism reducing lead breakage and Pentel Ain Stein's claim to be their strongest and least prone to breakage lead. With 0 breaks and smooth writing the NanoDia take their place as my favorite lead replacing the Staedtler Mars Micro Carbon I used to enjoy.

Love this lead. I tend to not use pencils because they don't write dark enough. This is very dark with not a lot of pressure needed, not easily broken, and not likely to smudge like it says (and this is coming from a BAD lefty writer)

Compared this to Neox 2B. Both are very nice but the Pentel is a touch darker, less prone to breaking and lasts longer. *Maybe* the Neox writes a bit smoother but it's close and as this beats the Neox in all other areas I'll be sticking with the Ain Stein.

Lead:
Very nice. It's pretty strong so it works for me. But when it comes down to it...i prefer this over the pentel ain hi-polymer led.

Dispenser:
Super cool. If you think that the hi-polymer led dispenser is cool....this is just awesome! It's sleek and you just turn the top cap to the side to slide the led out. It fits much better in a pencil case than the ain does b/c there's no finger thing sticking out of it.

Also, the viewing window is orange tinted which is pretty cool. sorta makes the leads look orange-ish...^^

Pencil lead is a pretty mundane everyday item, but this 2B lead is nice. It writes more smoothly than the typical HB and leaves nice, dark lines. This is a little more expensive than buying regular HB locally, but worth it in my opinion.

On another note, JetPens has been phenomenal to do business with. Order from them with confidence.
